Day 4 of Koroneihana sees thousands arrive at Tūrangawaewae to mark the first coronation of Te Arikinui Kuini Nga wai hono i te po.

The CEO of Te Matatini, Carl Ross, is excited for the mauri to be at Tūrangawaewae.
“Kua rongo ana i te kōrero i te rā nei. Ka noho kotahi ai tātou. Big theme for today and having the mauri arrive today is something that is very very special to us. Everyone is buzzing, everyone’s been performing, even some of those old guns are coming out…”Earlier in the day on the paepae in front of the meeting house Māhinarangi, Chair of Te Matatini Tā Herewini Parata asked Te Arikinui to be the matron of Te Matatini.
“Kei te tamāhine, he tono tā Te Matatini ki a koe. Kia noho koe hei tau matua mō te Matatini mai i tēnei rā haere ake nei. Ko tō tipuna, ko Te Ātairangikāhu te tau matua tuatahi.
Nō muri mai, ko tō pāpā ki a Kiingi Tūheitia, tēnei wā. E tono ana te Matatini kia rarau mai koe i tēnei taonga ka noho ko koe hei taumata mō te Matatini. Hoi anō, e hika mā, tēnā tātou i tēnei Koroneihana ātaahua, te mutunga mai, te tuitui i a tātou i runga i te ōhākī, a tōna pāpā i a Kingi Tūheitia, kia Māori tātou ia rā, ia rā, ia rā, i a wā, i a wā.Hoi anō, ko tāku e tāpiri nei, kia whakaaro Māori tātou. Thousands have attended the first koroneihana of Te Arikinui Kuini Nga wai hono i te po, hearing her first address as Māori Queen.
Ngāti Rangi spokesperson and Kiingitanga advocate Che Wilson says the Māori Queen is the embodiment of what it means to be Māori.
“I te rangi i whakaatu atu i tōna aroha nui ki tōna reo, i tōna aroha nui ki tōna ahurea i roto i te poi, me te mea nei e kite atu ana i te pakari o te tinana. Nā reira koia tērā, te kaiwhakatinana i te kupu i tēnei ra.”

Kapa haka from all corners of Te Kāhui Maunga, recent hosts of Te Matatini, are gathered at Tūrangawaewae to hand over the mauri of Te Matatini.
This year’s winner of Te Matatini’s manukura wahine, Aroha Broughton-Pue describes the mauri of Te Matatini as being a force to unite te iwi Māori.
“Tuatahi ake he whakakotahi i a tātou, tuarua he whakaora i a tātou, otirā, ngā mahi hakahaka o roto i a tātou.”

Te Mauri o Te Matatini is making it’s way onto Tūrangawaewae, the handing over ceremony of Te Matatini from Te Kāhui Maunga to Waikato.
During this years Matatini festivities, more than 50 kapa haka stood at Te Matatini ki Te Kāhui Maunga.
Kāhui Maunga spokesperson, Eljah Pue says the job of hosting Te Matatini is getting harder and regions need to look at how they can best support the kaupapa.
“He uaua mō ngā rohenga te manaaki i te mauri. Kāore e kore ka nui ake ngā tīma e uru atu ki roto i ngā kōwhiringa o Te Matatini. Nōreira, me pēhea tātou e tiaki i tō tātou kaupapa, me pēhea hoki tātou e tiaki i te kaupapa i ngā rohenga iti.”

Following her kauhau, Te Arikinui joined her people of Waikato as they performed the poi ‘Timatangia Te Puea’ followed by the haka ‘He Oranga Mai’
