Public submission deadline extended for Treaty Principles Bill

Breaking

The deadline for public submissions on the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Bill has been extended, after persistent technical issues in the final days of the submission period barred many from having their say.

The Justice Select Committee, to which the bill has been referred, met this morning to discuss the possibility of an extension.

The committee has agreed the deadline will be extended to 1pm Tuesday, January 14, according to a report by Stuff.

The parliament website will re-open for submissions from 1pm today.

RNZ is reporting more than 300,000 online submissions were received regarding the bill, and around half of them arrived on the last day.

That would mean it surpasses the previous record of around 100,000 submissions on the Conversion Practices Prohibition Legislation Bill in 2021.

More to come.
