Te Iwi o te Hīkoi is set to gather at Whangaehu Marae on Monday, January 6th, at 9 a.m. to honour the legacy of Kahurangi Tariana Turia, known fondly as Whaea Tari.
Her bravery and leadership were integral to the movement for the protection of New Zealand’s coastline, Te Hīkoi mō te Takutai.
Her passing has deeply affected many, and the timing of this hīkoi is both poignant and significant.
Watch live:
The organisers emphasised the importance of acknowledging Whaea Tari’s pivotal role, urging everyone to pay their respects and celebrate her contributions.
Te Iwi o te Hīkoi’s procession will reflect the deep reverence and gratitude held for her tireless work.
As a key figure in advocating for Māori rights and the environment, Whaea Tari’s legacy continues to resonate in the hearts of many.
In an effort to ensure the event is respectful and well-organized, attendees are encouraged to confirm their attendance via direct message to @tewharewhakaaro.
This will allow the hau kāinga (local hosts) to prepare for the size of the gathering and avoid overwhelming them during this emotionally charged occasion.
The passing of Whaea Tari has left a void, but her enduring influence on the Māori community and the country as a whole remains.
The event will be an opportunity for all to reflect on her immense contributions and to honor her memory.
As Te Kāhui o Toitū te Tiriti expressed, “Moe mai rā e kui, ko te aroha o tō whānau, o ō iwi, otirā, o te ao Māori whanui hei korowai i a koe” — may your legacy continue to wrap us in love and guidance.
