Te Huia attempts to break shearing record

Stacey Te Huia, Te Kuiti shearer, attempted to break the world’s nine-hour strong wool ewe-shearing record in Benneydale.

This was the second time Te Huia had tried to break the record, currently held by Rodney Sutton.

Starting at 5am, the day was broken up into five runs, which allows for meal or rest breaks, and finishes at 5pm.

But setting a new world shearing record today at Te Hape Station wasn't meant to be for 36-year-old Te Huia.

After a slow start, he called it quits after getting through 427 sheep, just under 300 shy of the number he needed.

Coming from a strong family of shearers, he was trying to crack the current world record of 721 set by Rodney Sutton in 2007, a record which has only been attempted four times in the last 20 years.

To get an understanding of how taxing this type of work is, he went through 427 sheep, with each sheep weighing an average of 60kg.

However, the months of training through crossfit have not gone to waste as Stacey sets his sights on his next competition in a few weeks in Australia.
