The Ngāti Toa Rangatira exhibition launched with the ascent of local iwi authority members to Te Papa, to see their stories and treasures on display to the Nation.
According to Taku Pārai, “It's been a significant year for us, we signed our Deed of Settlement and now we're here telling our stories. I salute my tribe, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, as we celebrate this occasion.”
Arapata Hakiwai, acting CEO of Te Papa museum says this is also a time where local iwi of Wellington can share their stories with the Nation and the world.
“It's a huge day, Ngāti Toa Rangatira's exhibition, called Whiti Te Rā has been opened, many members of Ngāti Toa Rangatira are here at Te Papa, it's a great honour for us of Te Papa museum.”
The Whiti Te Rā exhibition will be on display for two and a half years.
