Traditional Māori fishing technique a hit with youth

A traditional Māori fishing technique has been revived to teach children in the North.

The Historic Places Trust has revived one of six stone fish traps to demonstrate to school children how local Māori used to catch fish more than 150 years ago.

At high tide the trap is set.  It’s the perfect time to catch the fish when they come in to feed in the mangroves.  When the tide subsides, it leaves fish in the shallow pools.

Local school children have developed an interest in the traditional fish catching method and have acquired the skills to catch a decent feed.

And most importantly, the children enjoy the pleasures of eating their days catch.
