A slice of Māori art and culture has been unveiled on Antarctica at Scott Base's 56th birthday.
Ngāi Tahu were asked to carve the 2m high pouwhenua, and on Sunday, Ngāi Tahu leader, Sir Mark Solomon, and Prime Minister John Key unveiled it.
Antarctica NZ chief executive, Lou Sanson, said many of his staff at the base are Māori, so the pouwhenua was very appropriate.
Mark Solomon also joked with the crowd by saying the pou did not mean Ngāi Tahu was about to lodge a claim on Antarctica.
